Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs entered, by the method stated below it. BurdenRateLedger publishes no wage, no tax rate, no benefit cost and no industry labor percentage: the defaults are a worked example to replace with your own payroll's figures.

Construction labor tracking software is sold to the contractor who has learned the hard way that hours at the wage are not the cost of the job: the burden on each hour, the payroll taxes, the workers' compensation premium a construction class carries, the benefits and the tools, is the difference between a job that made money and one that only looked like it. What the software has to do for a small contractor is small and exact: hold a loaded rate per person, take the crew's hours by job, and read the labor cost against the labor price on the bid, so the margin on the job is a figure and not a hope. This guide is about that, and the free construction labor calculator on this site prices a crew's hours with no account.

The loaded rate, with the construction burden in it

Construction carries a heavier burden than most trades: the workers' compensation class rate, liability insurance, and often union or prevailing-wage fringe on top of the wage. The software has to hold that loaded rate per person, from your own payroll's and insurer's figures, and use it for every hour tracked; a system that tracks at the wage is tracking the wrong number.

Crew hours by job, read at the rate

Each entry is a person, a job and hours; each job's labor cost is the hours at each person's loaded rate. Tracked daily rather than reconstructed from payroll, the job's labor cost is readable while the crew is still on site, which is the only time it can still be acted on.

Cost against the bid, per job

The bid priced the labor at the loaded rate plus markup; the tracking shows what the labor has cost; the software shows both on the job so the foreman and the office read the same margin. The paid plan keeps every job with its crew, its hours, its cost and its price, and exports the lot for the accountant.

Construction labor tracking software: common questions

What should construction labor tracking software do? Hold a loaded hourly rate per employee that includes the payroll taxes, workers' compensation and benefits on the wage, record crew hours by job, and show each job's labor cost against the labor price on the bid. Scheduling, payroll filing and a GPS time clock are separate products; the cost of the hour against the price of the job is this one.

Is there a free construction labor calculator? Yes. The construction labor calculator on this site is free and needs no account: the crew, the hours each, the loaded rate and your markup in, the crew hours, the labor cost and the labor price out, printed as it stands. BurdenRateLedger Pro keeps every job's crew, hours, cost and price against the record.

What markup should a contractor put on labor? Your own, set to carry your overhead and the profit you need; the worked example uses 20% to show the arithmetic and nothing more. The markup goes on the loaded cost, not the wage, because a markup on the wage has to cover the burden before it covers anything else. The tool publishes no markup.
