Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs entered, by the method stated below it. BurdenRateLedger publishes no wage, no tax rate, no benefit cost and no industry labor percentage: the defaults are a worked example to replace with your own payroll's figures.
A labor management system, as the phrase is sold, is warehouse software: engineered standards, pick rates, performance against a standard for hundreds of associates, priced for the operations that run them. The small employer who searches for one wants something different and smaller, and this guide is about that version: a system that knows what each hour of labor costs loaded, what labor is running as a share of revenue, and what a crew's hours on a job cost and were sold for, kept in one place and read the same way every period. What it has to do is hold the loaded rate, the percentage and the job record together; what it does not have to do is anything a warehouse system does. The free labor burden calculator on this site loads the rate with no account.

The rate, loaded from your own payroll
The system's first fact is what an hour costs: the wage, the employer share of payroll taxes as your provider states it, benefits and insurance divided by hours actually worked, and tools and training on top. Loaded once per employee and dated, it is the rate every job and every percentage reads from, and it is yours, from your figures; the system publishes no rate.
The percentage, against a target you set
Loaded labor for the period over revenue for the same period is the labor percentage, and the target is your own for your business. The system shows the percentage, the labor the target would allow on that revenue and the gap between them, so a period over target is a dollar figure to act on and not a feeling about the month.
The job record, crew hours at the loaded rate
Each job carries the crew, the hours, the labor cost at the loaded rates and the price it was sold at, filed against the employees who worked it. That record is what a labor management system is for at this size, and the paid plan keeps it, brands it and exports it.
Labor management system: common questions
What does a labor management system do? For a warehouse, it measures associates against engineered standards. For a small employer, which is who this site is for, it holds the loaded cost of each employee's hour, labor as a share of revenue against a target, and each job's crew hours, cost and price, in one record. BurdenRateLedger is the second kind and does not pretend to be the first.
How much does a labor management system cost? Warehouse systems are priced by quote for the operations that run them and publish no price. BurdenRateLedger Pro is $49 a month for the whole crew, every employee and every job; the free tools on this site compute the loaded rate, the percentage and the job price with no account at all.
Do I need a labor management system or payroll software? You need payroll software to pay people and file taxes; it does that and this does not. You need something like this when the question is what the hour costs loaded, what labor is running as a share of revenue and what a job's labor cost against its price, which payroll does not answer and a spreadsheet answers only until the formula drifts.
